In our ever growing; ever trendy US scene there are a few names known throughout the Country. Two of those names are Sam Dobbins and Anna Taylor. This pair has not only provided us with countless visual car porn but have recently been stepping the entertainment media game up MORE then ever. With numerous blogs popping up and everyone striving to find fresh new ways to deliver the content they decided to step away from the internetZ and create a Coffee Table Book fit for any home, garage, bar (We like this one) or tattoo shop
Recently we had a chance to sit down and ask the Creators of More Than More a few questions. If you didn’t know Sam and Anna before you will after this!
PART 1: Anna Taylor
1. First, I’m not sure many people know (myself included), but how long have you been shooting and what made you first pickup a camera?
I’ve been shooting since I was about 15 (18 years… YIKES). I learned how to shoot and develop my own film and prints when I started working on the school yearbook. Luckily my Dad was a Photographer, so I had access to a darkroom at home. I spent many, many hours in the darkroom in high school. It smelled like hell, and there were ghosts in there, too, but it was totally worth it, watching images emerge on the paper like magic!
2. Did you dive right into Automotive shoots or did you have another form of photography in mind at first?
I graduated from art school with a degree in photography, so I had lofty dreams of being a famous “art-eest”. Hahaha! Surprise! You’d have a better chance of getting struck by lightning! I had some good friends who were into VWs and wanted to start a website. This was in 2000-2001, so as you know, photo blogs didn’t really exist then. I had to scan negatives to get the photos online. But we barreled right into it, and I found myself shooting the likes of Chris Jacovini, Gina Musilli and Marc Cheetham right off the bat. I discovered I loved it, and since my dad was always into cars, it was a pretty easy transition.
3. What are you shooting for gear these days?
iPhone + Instagram
4. I know there are lots of young Photographers who look up to the work you put out so with that said, Who do you look up to?
I look up to those young Photographers who are trying to break into this scene now. It was entirely different when I started. The competition is fierce and people are putting out really amazing stuff these days – stuff that inspires me to be better! *cough* Josh Garcia *cough*.
5. Is there anything you really want to shoot and just haven’t gotten the chance yet?
I desperately want to shoot on the salt flats. I know it’s been done a hundred million times, but it’s one of those things – kinda like mecca for auto photogs. I wish I could take my dad’s ’59 El Camino out there, but I’d settle for getting his car shot period. It’s strange how you can get caught up in other adventures and end up putting off shooting great things that are right under your nose.
6. Let’s talk More Than More, Just like Sam you seem quite busy PVW shoots, shows etc…Where did the idea to start the More Than More project come from?
The idea was actually born out of complete and total exhaustion. We were on our way back to Spokane after we’d finished shooting at Leavenworth. We were on about 7 hours of sleep in 5 days, and we were just talking about ideas, trying to stay awake. I mentioned I’d always wanted to do a small printed book of photographs with no text. Turns out Sam had had a similar idea, and the rest was history. One idea after another started bouncing around that little Passat wagon, so many that we decided we needed to install blow-off valves on our brains. It’s been quite an amazing experience developing this partnership based on a mutual love of photography, the automotive scene, and all the incredible people.
7. The Movie: give us some more background on what the movie will bring to its viewers and did you have a favorite portion filming or a favorite scene from it?
This is a really tough question, because you never know what something will bring to your audience, whether it’s photographs, or websites, or designs, or in this case a movie. You have hopes for it, but you never know exactly how it will be received. We’re HOPING it will make viewers feel like they’re at the Leavenworth Drive event in Washington – from the excitement the night before, to the incessant rain, to the incredible cars, to the shenanigans that night. We really wanted it to be more than just the standard 4 minute flashy, blinky Vimeo video that everyone is used to. We wanted it tell the full story of an incredible event. The best possible outcome would be that after watching MTAD, people will make the trek to Leavenworth next year from all over the country. As far as favorite scenes, I can’t say too much, but there’s a cameo from someone pretty famous who has only been caught on film ONCE in history. And that’s all I can say until after the premiere…
8. These questions are coming from a Man who enjoy’s his beer, do you have a favorite Stout besides GENG? HaHa
Touché! Haha. Well, this answer is coming from a woman who enjoys HER beer. But I actually love cooking with stout (chili) more than I enjoy drinking it. Yum!! I’ll try most anything and really really love trying new beers. But I’d have to say Yeungling Lager is my favorite go-to beer. Pretty standard and boring answer, but what can I say! It’s the truth!
9. What can we expect from Anna Taylor in 2012?
Hopefully we can expect me to get a few more hours of sleep in ’12!! This year has been bananas. But I’m really excited about all the new plans in the works – especially since I’ve basically fallen off the radar for the last few years. I’d gotten wrapped up in making websites and lost track of the photographs. But I’m back in action, and hopefully with more shoots, more books, some printed pieces, and a few other things we have up our sleeves over at MTM, I’ll keep myself firmly planted on the radar for a while.
10. The books are an awesome way to view what we love in a casual stare at almost anywhere manner, When might we see the next book released?
Well, shucks. Thanks! Next spring is the ultimate goal for Vol 2. If you like that little book, we’ve got lots of other things in the works, too, so keep your eyes peeled!
11. I tried to keep this short and to the point, Anything you want to say, Shout outs, love, hate anything….
SUPER shout out to Gengstout and Josh Garcia for being so supportive of our endeavors. We’d be nowhere without support like yours. THANKS!!
