I’ve been following my friend kevin’s(bigK) mk3 project for a while now.  From it’s humble beginnings as a run of the mill 2.0l golf to the shaved, smoothed, slammed beast you see here.  After building a set of wide rado steels and bolting on some coilovers things were headed in the right direction, but more power was in order.  Telling people that the car was quick and fun, for a 2.0l was getting old fast and a VR swap was in order.  While that was going down the tired, rusty paint would have to go as well in favor of a full respray.  What we see here is not the end of the project, but with only a few tweaks/mods left, I’d say progress is going quite well.

We started shooting with the lights but couldnt quite get the true color of the paint to come out…….

so the lights were soon packed up and we went all natural…..

Get back to your roots people, Seriously. There truly is nothing cooler then an Old School VAG. Gritty, sometimes dangerous, almost always lower then you, loud, and all perfectly legal in the eyes of the law. To me you truly can’t beat having an older car. I must truly sound like a hypocrite driving my Mk4 but I’ll say it flat out, as much as I love my car after spending sometime with some older one’s lately I have a huge urge to stop progress on my car and find myself a shell and rip into it.

But I can’t so I’ll just live vicariously threw Troy Wilson and his 1984 Rabbit.

I have gotten to know Troy pretty good in the past year or so, Stand up guy, Father,Husband and shop owner of Darkstar Tattoo in Massachusetts(Peep the link) He is also the proud owner of this Rabbit. It all started back in 2002 when Troy purchased the car from A Father and Son duo. It had some body work and black paint done to it but it was not going to hold up to his standard’s. After driving the car daily for a few years it was time to cover it in some fresh Single Stage PPG Teal. A killer combo to go with the overall flow, feel and style of the car and Troy himself, Laid back and belonging on the beach.

Due to the motor work performed you can get to the beach in no time Built top end, Ported and Polished Head, 268 Cam, Four into One header with Magnaflow Exhaust. All being stuck to the road on the ATS Classics and low with Vmaxx coils. The wheels were an easy and long known choice for Troy, In the form of 13×8 and 13×9 they sit perfect under the fenders. The list of exterior and interior mods seems endless all things that I’m trying to familiarize myself with. Black Cabriolet seats, Black door cards, and black dash make the interior snug and are simple and effective.

To me every car should have a story, every car should flow from top to bottom and front to back, the small subtle thing’s make the world of difference to me. A reflection of a personality? Maybe in some cars. There is definitely a presence of Troy Wilson’s laid back cool “surfEsque” style to this car.
It is exactly what cars should be, not just a few mods and instant Internet Status but looked at as never finished, an on going project that always needs tweaking. Troy sets a fine example of putting thought into a build and loving it all the same. Even when it has it’s problems you still come back with new ideas.

Get Back To Our Roots is what we all need to do.
