As I continue to learn more and more about forced induction (I thought I knew it all at one point), I realize it’s more and more complicated than I thought. That being said, I went ahead and paid a few friends at Infamous Performance a visit. They typically work on DSMs but know their fair share about turbos.
Matt used to own a pretty intense 16v Turbo MK2 and then went ahead and swapped the drivetain (plus some extras) into a MK3 drag shell complete with parashoot. After seeing a few pictures on the local forums, I swung by their shop to not only ask them a few questions but to also confirm Matt’s latest project.
Now, E30 BMWs are awesome period the end (IMO). Even at VW/Audi Shows, it’s no suprise to see several E30s. I was glad to see that Matt’s new project was in fact an E30 BMW 318. But there’s a catch, the 1.8L engine is gone and in it’s place is not from a BMW or even a european car for that matter. What has replaced the BMW engine is what’s referred to in the DSM world as a 1G Evo3 4G63. Some other highlight’s include a Tremec T56 6spd Transmission, a Precision Billet 6262 Turbo, Infamous 4″ up pipe, E30 M3 4.10 Diff, and E36 M3 rear brake conversion. The list goes on and on. The point here is that this car has an extensive amount of work done to it. I also watched him pull it out of the driveway and this makes some noise for sure.
Now, of course this car will be a “love/hate” kind of subject. However, this car is very out of the ordinary and built to create a lot of power.
This BMW is nearly complete and I asked him “what made you do it?”. Matt replied that he had been surrounded by DSMs long enough that it eventually sparked his interest in attempting this swap. All I have to say is good luck to Matt as this project nears completion, it will be pretty serious once it’s all said and done.
